The Science Based Target Initiative (SBTi) was founded in 2015 as a partnership between CDP, the United Nations Global Compact, the World Resources Institute, and the Wildlife Fund as a means of encouraging private companies to reduce their emissions in-line with a 2 degree warming scenario per the 2015 Paris Climate Agreement.
SBTi is one of, if not the most, popular and comprehensive target-setting framework for company emissions. Over 6,000 companies are active on the SBT dashboard, and nearly 3,500 have approved SBTs.
The following is a simplified guidance document on how to set a Science-Based Target for individual, non-SME companies. This guide is not meant to be comprehensive, but rather to give an executive summary of the SBT process to help you get started.
